Senior Chinese leaders stress epidemic prevention

Senior Chinese leaders continue to inspect quake-hit areas in Sichuan province. They're calling for more efforts in epidemic prevention and resettlement.

During the past three days, top legislator Wu Bangguo visited hospitals, railway stations, factories and schools in several cities and counties severely hit by the May 12th earthquake.

When listening to a briefing of the disaster relief work, Wu Bangguo spoke positively of measures taken by the local government to fight the disaster.

But he added there is more work to do concerning the prevention of secondary disasters and reconstruction efforts.

Wu Bangguo first emphasized epidemic prevention. He said a detailed and overall epidemic prevention system is needed to strictly monitor the situation and prevent major diseases spreading in quake areas.

Wu Bangguo said prevention of secondary disasters needs careful attention. He especially mentioned the potential danger facing locals by quake-formed lakes. He said people's safety is the top priority and evacuation plans should be well considered.

Wu Bangguo also called for a proper solution to the housing problem affecting 3.5 million families. He said measures should be taken to deal with both temporary housing and long term resettlement. He told local officials to strengthen the management of the distribution of disaster relief funds and materials.

He said the fight against the disaster is a long-term task and local officials need to be well prepared.
