World donates 1.9 bln yuan for quake relief

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Qin Gang says national governments and non-governmental organizations in 155 countries have donated or pledged to donate to the relief work in affected areas in Sichuan.

The total of donations from abroad is currently close to 1.9 billion yuan, or 270 million US dollars, and continues to rise.

The ambassador of the Dominican Republic, David King Hsiu came to the Chinese Foreign Ministry on Tuesday and handed over a personal cash donation of 100,000 US dollars.

So far foreign countries have promised to donate more than 210,000 urgently-needed tents and nearly 50,000 tents have already been sent to Sichuan. Foreign rescue teams have gradually left the country but these have been replaced by foreign medical teams.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Qin Gang said, "At present, national governments or non-governmental organizations from 155 countries, as well as 10 international and regional organizations have expressed the willingness to donate to our relief work. Donations from these countries have already amounted to nearly 1.9 billion yuan."
