Relief materials donated by the British government arrived Thursday night in quake-hit Shifang city, Sichuan province.

There is urgent need for the supplies. Lives are at stake, and the shipment got the "green light" all the way along the route. The goods consist mainly of tents. When they arrived at the Shifang railway station --waiting soldiers and volunteers raced to deliver them to quake survivors.

Within roughly 40 minutes, the tents were sent to a school, where hundreds of victims gathered in the night air. Volunteers took another 20 minutes to help survivors erect the tents. A glow of contentment seemed to hover over the descending night. Rain was forecast. But these people would spend the night safely under shelter.

Early Friday morning, a third shipment of relief materials, valued at 450,000 US dollars arrived at Chengdu. That shipment was donated by the Italian government.
