China earthquake death toll rises to 55,740

BEIJING, May 23 (Xinhua) -- The death toll in China's major earthquake increased by 4,589 to 55,740 as Friday noon, according to the Information Office of the State Council.

And 292,481 people were injured and 24,960 missing in the 8.0-magnitude quake that jolted southwestern Sichuan Province on May 12.
