The UN chief's trip is to facilitate the effective distribution and utilization of international assistance for Myanmar cyclone victims. After a meeting with Prime Minister, Lieutenant General Thein Sein, and a prayer for the victims at a Yangon pagoda, Ban Ki-moon was flown to a village where 500 people were huddled in just over 100 tents.

The cyclone death toll has risen to 78,000 with another 56,000 missing.
