Special Report:   Strong quake jolts SW China

The Jiuzhou gymnastic stadium in Mianyang is now housing more than 20,000 earthquake survivors. Taking care of them are some 2,000 volunteers.

An earthquake victim said, "These clothes and bottles of water are all provided by volunteers."

A volunteer said, "One of us has been working here nonstop for more than 40 hours now."

On Monday night, Mianyang radio sent out a call for more than 500 volunteer workers. In less than an hour, more than 1,000 people showed up at the recruiting station. In the last 3 days, more and more people have been volunteering their help.

After receiving the news, a chicken-farm owner donated thousands of boiled eggs. Many other villagers also brought products from their farms.

This young man volunteered to maintain order in the Jiuzhou gymnastic stadium. Others brought food and hot soup.

Xie Shiyou and Xie Shijun live in Maojiazhen in Mianyang. The two brothers woke up at 5 a.m. to prepare soup for the earthquake victims.

This girl's name is Zeng Lijun. Born in Beichuan, she came to Mianyang to study. After the quake, she searched every hospital in Mianyang, but found none of her relatives. With no news of them, she decided to help other people first.

In Beichuan area, thousands of government officials, teachers, and factory workers are joining the relief work.

Via this narrow road connecting Beichuan and the outside world, tens of thousands of people have been transferred to safety.
