Special Report:   Strong quake jolts SW China

People in half of the provinces and municipalities in China were able to feel the quake.

In Nanning, the capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, people felt a powerful tremor for a few seconds. Those in tall buildings reported feeling dizzy. Construction sites, schools and public buildings were immediately evacuated. Cracks appeared in some walls.

Most areas in Yunnan province felt the quake, as the province neighbors Sichuan.

Local seismologists say the quake force equaled 6 to 7 magnitude in Guizhou, another neighboring province of Sichuan.

In the Inner-Mongolia Autonomous Region, local TV stations interviewed seismologists who explained that the tremor felt there was from the quake in Sichuan. However, since the capital of the region is 1,300 kilometers away from the epicenter, there was no real danger. People were calm.

Xuanen County in Hubei felt strong tremor. Trees and plants swayed without any wind. People were moved into the streets or into empty spaces. Police were mobilized to patrol on the streets.
