The UN Security Council is urging Lebanese parties to exercise "calm and restraint" following the latest wave of violence.

The UN Security Council is urging Lebanese parties to  exercise "calm and restraint" following the latest  wave of violence.

In a statement read out by Britain's UN ambassador John Sawers, the council members expressed deep concern about the current clashes and unrest in Lebanon.

They also called for the immediate reopening of all roads in Beirut. The council members stressed the need to uphold the security and sovereignty of Lebanon.

They also expressed their support for the constitutional institutions of the country. The UN Security Council also called on all sides to work together to elect a new president through peaceful dialogue.
