Carter meets with Syrian president

Visiting former US President Jimmy Carter has held talks with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the capital of Damascus.

Their talks focused on the deteriorating situation in the Hamas -controlled Gaza Strip, and the stalled Mideast peace process. They also discussed the possibility of lifting the blockade on Gaza and reaching a comprehensive truce between the Palestinians and Israelis. Both leaders expressed their support for solving the conflicts in the Middle East region through political dialogue. Carter also met with exiled Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal on Friday.

Deputy chief of the exiled Hamas politburo, Moussa Abu Marzouk, said they discussed the situation in Gaza, the potential lifting of the siege in Gaza, and the fate of Israeli captive, Gilad Shalit.
