Thousands of Chinese students took to the streets in Sydney on Sunday to oppose Tibet independence and show their support for the Beijing Olympics torch relay.

Thousands of Chinese students took to the streets in Sydney on Sunday to oppose Tibet independence and show their support for the Beijing Olympics torch relay.

The rally began in Sydney's Chinatown and made its way to George Avenue in the city center. The marchers stretched back over about one kilometer.Students and overseas Chinese were enthusiastic but behaved in a civilized manner.

Rally organizer Lin Yuxiang said, "We are here to demonstrate against the riots in Tibet and the biased reporting by some western media that distorted the facts. We are protecting the peace and unity of our country. That's our spirit."

The rally began in Sydney's Chinatown and made its way to George Avenue in the city center. The marchers stretched back over about one kilometer.

Li Tao, president of China Reunification Promotion Assn., said, "We are doing our share to express support for the Beijing Olympics and the torch relay."

Organizers say the event was initiated by the Chinese community in Sydney. They urged the public, especially people in the West to respect China's territorial integrity, and not undermine the peaceful nature of the Olympics.
