Li Changchun arrives in Algiers

In Africa a senior official of the Communist Party of China is in Algeria on the first leg of his five-nation tour. Li Changchun is a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee. He arrived in the capital of Algiers on Saturday evening.

Algeria is the first leg of Li Changchun's five-nation tour.

Algerian Prime Minister, Abdelaziz Belkhadem, received the senior Chinese official at the airport.

In a written statement, Li Changchun said he was pleased to visit Algeria during the 50th anniversary of Sino-Algerian diplomatic ties.

He noted that Algeria is an important Islamic and Arabian country in Africa. And that Algeria has played a special role in international and regional affairs.

The senior official also praised the the traditional friendship between China and Algeria.

And Li Changchun said cooperation between the two sides has been furthered in all areas, since the establishment of diplomatic ties.

He especially noted the strategic cooperation relationship forged between China and Algeria in 2004, which upgraded bilateral ties to a new level.

During his stay, Li Changchun is expected to exchange views on various issues with Algerian leaders. Among them efforts to strengthen China's traditional friendship with Algeria, as well as to boost economic and trade cooperation. Especially pushing forward with efforts to fulfill agreements made during the Beijing summit of the China-Africa cooperation forum that was held in November, 2006.

Li Changchun is also planning to discuss international and regional issues of common concern with Algerian leaders.

After his visit to Algeria Li Changchun is scheduled to travel to Mauritania, Morocco, Tunisia and Syria.
