Foreign diplomats take great interest in NPC meetings

Many foreign diplomats were invited to observe the just-concluded first session of the 11th National People's Congress. The diplomats showed great interest in the work of many of the NPC meetings. Among the highlights, the State Council's institutional reform plan and measures to improve macro-economic regulations.

This year's NPC session ushers in a new five-year term of China's top legislative body and the State Council. It also coincides with the year of the Beijing Olympics and the 30th anniversary of China's reform and opening-up. Lembe-beina Eric Bertrand, second sec. of Embassy of Central Africa Republic, said, "The most impressive thing about this Congress was the feeling of the Chinese government to make people's lives better and better."

Elizabeth Beatrice Wamanga, counselor of Embassy of Uganda, said, "The economic development, the plan for the next five years, I think these will bring China to a new level."

Lithuanian ambassador Rokas Bernotas said, "The creation of big super ministries is a very important decision."

Alejandro P. Castaneda, political counselor of Embassy of Mexico, said, "The restructuring of the State Council is looking for more efficiency. China, I think, is looking to make better use of its resources, human resources, financial resources, in a more efficient way."

Janez Zakeij, Commercial Counselor of Embassy of Slovenia, said, "There are many new changes, new faces and new policies. Since the world economy is under pressure, I think the NPC is a good step for China."

Gilbert Frank Van Dijk, counselor of Embassy of Suriname, said, "I think the new government will give quite an opportunity for the prosperity of China."

Macro-economic controls, environmental protection and executive efficiency are the Chinese government's primary tasks over the next five years. Foreign diplomats say the challenges ahead will also provide many opportunities for China.
