Chen Xiaona is a junior at Beijing Science and Technology University and she is one of the many volunteers. She works part-time at this Olympic-designated hotel and one of her daily routines is to update this information board near the entrance.

Olympic volunteer Chen Xiaona said, "This notice board is important for the guests here."

Chen Xiaona says many of her schoolmates had applied to serve as volunteers but only a small number of them were recruited. The selection was based on criteria such as knowledge of the Olympic movement and competence in English. Chen Xiaona says she values her experience as a volunteer.

Olympic volunteer Chen Xiaona said, "Volunteer service in my mind means."

With less than six months to go before the opening ceremony more and more people are volunteering. Around 70,000 volunteers are required for the Summer Games, and about 30,000 for the Paralympics. Almost a million people have applied since recruitment for the two events began in August 2006.

With the Olympics fast approaching, volunteers are doing everything they can to get ready -- aiming to provide top quality service during the Games. They are making an invaluable contribution to the Olympiad through their initiative and voluntary service. And they are also serving as goodwill ambassadors -- for friends from around the world to know better about China and its people.
