China is clearly on the world stage in 2008.

A series of world-class events are scheduled to be held in the country this year.

And the upcoming Beijing Olympics is considered the most important highlight, of many.

Responding to a question regarding air quality in Beijing for the upcoming Olympics, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi expressed his confidence in Beijing's efforts to ensure a clean environment for the Games.

Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said, "I think most of the athletes from around the world are satisfied with Beijing's air quality. One thing that can not be denied is that many of the world-records broken by Chinese athletes took place in China and in Beijing. So I think, there will be more opportunities in Beijing for those athletes who are striving to be world-record holders. China has been taking a series measures to improve the environment. And I believe the air quality in China and in Beijing will become better and better."

Yang Jiechi also expressed his views on China's role in the international community.

He said that as one of the world's largest countries, China is ready to shoulder more responsibilities in international affairs.

Yang Jiechi said, "China has been dealing with international issues in an earnest and responsible manner. But, China is not able to shoulder responsibilities that are beyond its ability in international affairs. I want to stress that the responsibilities that China is taking -- are neither designated to serve some countries -- nor measured by their standards. We have to be responsible for the Chinese people... and the world... and the future. And with improvement in China's overall strength, we will certainly to do more in helping with international issues and push for peace and development in the world together with other countries."

Meanwhile, Yang Jiechi reiterated that China's will continue to adhere firmly to the road of peaceful development.

He says China is willing to be good friends and good partners with developing countries, as well as the rest of the world. And that China also stands ready to make contributions to world peace.

The foreign minister also urged countries around the world to follow the path of peaceful development. He stressed that peaceful solutions are the best way to solve international issues and promote a harmonious world.
