The chief procurator says a cornerstone of his organization's work has also been dealing with cases involving any abuses of duty.

Jia Chunwang, president of Supreme People's Procuratorate, said, "In the past five years, we have placed on file 179,696 cases of corruption and bribery, involving more than 200,000 people. "

The Supreme People's Court says it has focused on big cases, strengthening the coordination behind complex investigations. Thirty five officials at the ministerial level have been investigated. And more than 20 billion yuan of illicit money has been seized.

Both presidents say there's still a gap between what has been achieved so far and what the people fully demand. And they are promising to narrow that gap.

CPPCC members also attended the meeting without voting rights.

The judges and procurators hold an enormous responsibility as they work through the process of constructing a rule-of-law society. Especially when the country's legal system is still in the process of being perfected. The reports have drawn conclusions from their work in the past. And all Chinese citizens hope the country's supreme judicial bodies are ready for the challenges ahead."
