The ongoing NPC and CPPCC sessions have captured the attention of overseas Chinese and American scholars in the US.

President Hu Jintao's latest speech on cross-Straits relations was widely covered in both Chinese-language and English-language newspapers in the US.

An article in the Washington Post said that both China and the US oppose the Taiwan authorities' referendum on UN membership. And the Bush administration has used strong rhetoric calling the referendum a bad idea.

Overseas Chinese have also reacted strongly.

Wu Huiqiu, head of China's Peaceful Unification Assoc., said, "President Hu Jintao's remarks have provided a good framework for solving the cross-Straits issue. And the comments also show much sincerity towards Taiwan compatriots."

He Xiaohui, deputy head of China's Peaceful Unification Assoc., said, "President Hu has pointed out that the mainland should make great efforts to unite the Taiwan compatriots. This is very encouraging for us."

Regarding the economy, Dr. Denis Simon is vice-president of the Levin Institute of International Trade and Relations, State University of New York.

He says the Chinese government has done a good job in containing inflation.

Premier Wen Jiabao's government work report said the rise in the Consumer Price Index should be held at around 4.8 percent this year.

And Dr. Simon says he's optimistic about that target.

Dr Simon also says China has set the country's GDP growth at eight percent in 2008 which shows the government has found a balance point for the country's economic development.

And the growth target is expected to provide opportunities for China to change its modes of development.
