Sunday marks the last day of the lunar new year travel peak season. Railways across the country have carried more than 170 million passengers during the one and a half month period

Heavy snow prior to the Spring Festival led to an earlier than usual travel peak and a larger number of passengers. As a result, the Ministry of Railways began the lunar new year travel schedule 5 days earlier.

Despite the harsh winter weather, the number of passengers was still greater than in previous years. Although the peak travel season has ended, the number of passengers is still high in several cities in the southern and eastern regions. Authorities expect the situation to ease up after two more weeks.
