Ganzhou in East China's Jiangxi province is renowned for its oranges. Last year, locals had a good harvest, but bad weather has slowed orange picking and transport.

About 160,000 tons of the fruit are now piled up in warehouses. Most of the fruit should have been on sale before the busy Spring Festival period.

One farmer says orange prices have dropped a lot this year, and he has lost about 70,000 yuan, or about 10,000 US dollars.

Tons of ripe oranges are still hanging from the trees, while rising temperatures and further delays mean the fruit could rot. Local governments are urging orange processing factories over the country to buy more fruit.
