Special Report:   Winter Storm Relief

Several cities in China woke up to a bitterly cold morning on Tuesday as temperatures plummeted and snow and sleet fell. The central city of Wuhan in Hubei Province shivered as temperatures dropped 19 degrees Celsius in less than 48 hours.

The fresh round of snow was heaviest in the middle to lower reaches of the Yangtze River, as well as the Huaihe River belt. Following the country's snow disaster earlier in the year, the weather has again caused chaos.

Near Wuhan, at least eight people died in a traffic accident when a coach overturned on the icy highway. The eastern provinces of Jiangsu and Shandong have both been hit by snow. Sleet has fallen in Shanghai, where weather experts have forecast strong winds and plunging temperatures.
