Special Report:   Winter Storm Relief

Parts of Southwestern China are being battered by yet another round of rain and snow slowing transport and making power restoration more difficult.

Parts of Southwestern China are being battered by yet another round of rain and snow slowing transport and making power restoration more difficult.

Meanwhile, repair workers are working even harder as demand for electricity surges after the Spring Festival.

Temperatures have fallen below zero degrees centigrade again in some parts of the southwest.

In Yunnan Province, sleet and snow have left roads frozen. Local transport authorities have beefed up snow-clearing work to prevent more road accidents.

Sichuan Province and Chongqing Municipality have also been hit by fresh snowfall. The severe weather has damaged agricultural production, disrupted road links and affected locals' daily lives.

In other southern provinces, like Guangdong and Zhejiang, freezing temperatures are slowing repairs to the power network. But demand for power is surging as factories resume operations after the Spring Festival holiday... and local authorities are speeding up repairs to the damaged power network.

In Guangdong, one third of the worst hit power lines in Qingyuan county have been repaired.

Jin Jimin, director of Shenzhen Power Bureau, Guangdong Grid, said, "We can fix the power lines between Jiufeng and Liangjiang counties very soon. Locals will be able to use power before the Lantern Festival on February 21st."

In Jinhua county in Zhejiang Province, most of the damaged power lines are in mountain areas, making repairs more difficult. An emergency repair team has been working around the clock over the past two weeks, and power has now been partially restored to companies in Jinhua.
