China's first lunar orbiter Chang'e One is expected to face its first major challenge when the Earth eclipses the sun and blocks the supply of solar energy. China's space technicians say preparations have been carried out ahead of Thursday's eclipse.

China's first lunar orbiter Chang'e One is expected to face its first major challenge when the Earth eclipses the sun and blocks the supply of solar energy.

They have redirected the satellite's orbit,in order to shorten the time it's out of direct sunlight. The satellite would otherwise have been hidden from solar rays for three to four hours, possibly causing a power shortage.

The adjustment will shorten the time to two hours ensuring enough solar power for the orbiter. Chang'e One took off in late October and is expected to make a three-dimensional survey of the moon's surface.
