Special Report:   Winter Storm Relief

Power supply is being restored in southwest China's Qujing city after the electricity network was damaged by recent heavy snowfall. And, nearly all the key power lines in eastern and central China are working again after intensive repairs.

It was a fast recovery, taking into account that workers had to transport all the equipment by hand.

They have been working for almost a week.

The damage to Qujing city's power lines by recent heavy snow was devastating.

But now, 90 percent of power supply has been restored in the second biggest city in Yunnan Province.

It was a fast recovery, taking into account that workers had to transport all the equipment by hand.

An engineer said, "The repair work is very challenging. We have to face low temperatures, heavy fog and strong winds. But its our obligation to overcome all these difficulties."

Power supply to the city is likely to be fully restored before the end of the month.

In eastern and central China, engineers are working around the clock to reconnect power networks.

Power grids in Anhui and Jiangxi provinces are functioning again, after a month of snow storms. While in badly hit Guizhou Province in Southwest China, power transmission is running at half of normal capacity.

As power supplies are being restored, coal miners are also striving to ensure power plants have enough fuel.
