Special Report:   Winter Storm Relief

After a lengthy spell of harsh winter weather, temperatures in southern China have gradually started to rise. But experts have issued warnings about the damaging effects of the snow. Some departments, including those in charge of the repair work, have already taken measures to prevent accidents.

It is feared the melting snow could lead to some geological changes, causing landslides and cave-ins.

Salt and antifreeze have been sprayed on the roads during the snow storms. But when the snow melts, soil by the roadside will turn more alkaline. And if the pH number goes above 7, it will damage the plant life. Local governments have been urged to take the necessary measures.

It is feared the melting snow could lead to some geological changes, causing landslides and cave-ins.

More attention should be paid to the raised areas of the highways, villages in mountainous areas, important mining areas and places where repairs are already underway.

In Wuhan, capital of Central China's Hubei province, water pipes have burst.

The main pipe has just exploded, with the water spurting out about 3 meters high. The pipe is quite wide, and even two people can't hold it.

The drastic change in temperature caused the pipe to burst.

Experts advised that more measures should be taken during repair work to prevent the collapse of pylons as the ice continues to melt.
