The Ministry of Railways says train passenger volume reached a new peak across the country on Saturday as more than five million people returned from holidays. At nearly five percent higher than last year, the figure is a record new high.

The Ministry of Railways says train passenger volume reached a new peak across the country on Saturday as more than five million people returned from holidays.

Saturday was the sixth day of the peak travel period at the end of the Spring Festival holiday with about five million passengers -- mainly migrant workers and students -- leaving their hometowns.

This is 20,000 passengers more each day than in the same period last year. More than 700 additional trains have been put into operation for six days to help cope with the rush. Train services are expected to remain very busy in the next few days.
