According to folklore, a person's behavior during the New Year sets the tone for the entire year. So there is a litany of traditions and taboos that are respected during the Spring Festival. One of those taboos is never to break anything. But on the 5th day of the festival the taboo can be broken.

Chinese families traditionally mark the day with fireworks and by sitting down to feast on dumplings.
