Special Report:   Winter Storm Relief

Guizhou Province has supplied more than 150 large generators to six cities left in the dark by the weather. Duyun, which has been blacked out for almost three weeks, is noww finally able to meet urgent needs.

Elevators in the hospital are turned off and patients go to the operating room on the fifth floor with the help of staff. The power is reserved for lighting the operating rooms and illuminating other important areas of the building.

In Duyun, the streets remain dark at night. The precious supply of electricity is used only where it is most needed and for emergency situations.

In the ICU for infants, babies needing the most urgent treatment are kept warm in the incubators.

Over 600 people were hospitalized during the blackout. Generators and an emergency power supply system can meet the hospital's needs.

Director of a local hospital said, "Patients in our hospital are cared well. So far, there is not one medical failure due to power cut."

Repair work on the electrical grid has been ongoing for more than two weeks. While the work is done, large generators fill the gap. Eighty percent of the 300,000 people in Duyun have access to electricity. Generators have also been sent to some other areas and small generators have been supplied to rural areas. Utility providers are confident they can restore service to the whole province during the Spring Festival.
