Special Report:   Winter Storm Relief

The people of Chenzhou have now been without power for nine days. But they're still managing to remain calm even though the New Year holiday is around the corner.

Thanks to the resumption of the natural gas supply, three meals a day is still normal at the Huang's family.
Thanks to the resumption of the natural gas supply, three
meals a day is still normal at the Huang's family.

This family of six has very little option other than to sit around a small coal furnace. Most of the time conversation focuses on how best to cope with the disaster. A semi-conductor radio has become the only way to obtain outside information.

Huang's mother said, "It really is a tough time for all of us. But fortunately, the people here are keeping their spirits up. I think we can cope."

They can also get water now and then. Mr. Huang's grandmother seems to be the most optimistic member of the family.

Huang's grandmother said, "I'm in my eighties, but have never seen this much snow. I feel happy to have all the young people surrounding me. Whatever happens, we'll be celebrating our New Year."

And the Huangs haven't let the weather stop them preparing for the holiday as normal. They've stocked up on special foods for the celebration.

Ms. Huang said, "It's cold outside, but my family is as warm as the meal Mom just cooked us. I believe the worst of it will soon be over."

With the efforts of millions of families like this one, life here will hopefully return to normal in the Chinese New Year.
