The top leadership of the Communist Party of China have met to discuss disaster relief work. General Secretary Hu Jintao stressed that priority must be given to transport, power supplies and essential provisions for the people.

Standing Committee members who have visited disaster-hit areas presented reports on the current situation. Transportation and power supply have resumed in some areas. But adverse weather will continue in some southern provinces and the task of relief work is still huge. All relevant departments need to continue their hard work.

The meeting stressed that specific and detailed plans will be made for transport, power supply and civil affairs. Governments at all levels must put people's interests first, to ensure the supply of daily necessities, to reduce disruption to lives as much as possible in order to ensure a happy Spring Festival.

The meeting called on all regions and relevant authorities to unite in helping the afflicted areas. The meeting called on all Party members to be at the front line in the battle against disaster. It called on the armed forces to actively take part in the battle.

Relevant authorities are urged to resume agricultural production and major infrastructure construction as soon as possible, in order to lessen the losses and ensure the economy runs smoothly.
