Napolitano has asked Marini to verify the consensus existing on reforming electoral law.

The president is widely expected to ask Marini to seek cross-party consensus for an interim government with a mandate to reform election laws before Italy goes to the polls.

Marini will have a tough time convincing conservative opposition leader Silvio Berlusconi to drop his demands for immediate elections.
