The Arizona senator edged past former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, who had been caught in a close tie with McCain.

With 64 percent precincts' ballots calculated, McCain received 36 percent of the votes against Romney's 32 percent.

Former New York Mayor Rudy Guiliani was left far behind at the third place with 15 percent of the votes, fueling speculation on whether he would stay in the race or endorse his close friend, McCain.
