Special Report:   Winter Storm Relief

Air traffic has resumed at Hefei Airport in storm stricken Anhui Province. Most of the passengers who have been delayed can now depart from and get into the city. But more snow is expected to paralyze transport.

With the airport reopened, passengers delayed by the weather are finally on their way home.

The storm came to a temporary halt Tuesday morning. Cleaning up operations like this have been going nonstop over the past few days. With the airport reopened, passengers delayed by the weather are finally on their way home.

A delayed passenger said, "Our flight almost arrived here three days ago. But because the airport was closed, we had to return to Haikou and wait here. We bought some Haikou specialities to bring home, but they went had during the delay. We had to buy more."

Hefei Airport is ready, but airports in other storms affected are not. Landing requires better ground conditions than taking off and stranded passengers are still waiting for their boarding calls.

A airport staff said, "The closure of Changsha Airport is the main reason for the delay. Three to four flights were delayed here. We arranged accommodation for those passengers."

The extreme weather is truly a test of passengers' patience and the emergency response capacity of airports and airlines.

Things are returning to normal at Hefei Airport after it reopened on Monday. But many flights to and from the city have been delayed or cancelled due to snow or sleet in other affected areas. More storms are expected in the region on Thursday, likely adding more troubles to the travel misery.
