Special Report:   British PM visits China

BEIJING, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- British Prime Minister Gordon Brown will pay an official visit to China from Jan. 18-20 at the invitation of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao.

Brown was born in Glasgow, Scotland on Feb. 20, 1951. He graduated from the Edinburgh University and gained there a doctorate for history. In 1983, he was elected into the parliament as a Labor Party member. He then served successively as chairman of the Labor Party's Scottish Council and minister of state for the treasury, secretary of state for trade and industry and Chancellor of the Exchequer in the shadow cabinet of the Labor Party. On June 24, 2007, he was elected leader of the Labor Party. He became the 52th prime minister of Britain on June 27, 2007.

Brown is married with Sarah Brown. They have two sons.

Brown visited China twice in 2005 as the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
