With the Spring Festival just around the corner, the country''s public transport system is about to be put to the test again.

Transportation officials said on Tuesday that the number of travelers is expected to reach a new high this year, with some 2.4 billion travellers using public transport. The increase is partly the result of changes made to the country's official holiday schedule, which recently canceled the week-long May Day holiday and began the Spring Festival holiday one day earlier.

To handle the high passenger flow, the Ministry of Public Security is calling for more services during the peak days of travel and looking for ways to reduce traffic jams and accidents.
