China to build more rural roads

China's Ministry of Communications says it will dramatically increase investment in rural road construction. The central government will work with local governments to improve road transport links in remote and less developed regions across the country.

The vehicle consumption tax is a major source of revenue for China's road construction projects. The Ministry of Communications says around 40 billion yuan in vehicle consumption taxes will be spent this year on rural road construction, along with nearly five and a half billion yuan from government bonds.

Dong Xuebo, Planning Division Dir., Ministry of Communications, said, "Nearly half of the national vehicle consumption tax will be spent on rural road construction this year. And the government will earmark a further 500 million yuan from government bonds this year even though the bonds have seen sharp falls in recent years."
