Afghanistan has ordered the expulsion of a Briton working for the EU, and an Irishman working for the UN.

Officials say they are accused of being a threat to national security.

It is reported the pair may have visited the Taliban insurgent stronghold of Helmand recently, and met senior tribal elders with close links to the Taliban, or even met insurgent leaders themselves.

Afghan officials gave no further details of their arrests. European diplomats say they hope the incident is the result of a misunderstanding.
