Japanese PM willing to bring ties with China to a new stage

Fukuda says Japan-China relations have been developing smoothly since the visit by former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to China in October, 2006 and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's visit to Japan in April, 2007. Fukuda also called for more top-level exchange visits and building relations based on mutual trust.

On the economic front, Fukuda says China's economic development offers Japan and the rest of the world a good opportunity. China is Japan's largest trading partner. Meanwhile, Japan is the largest investor in China. Fukuda says both factors are important to the growth of a healthy economy in both countries.

Fukuda also says Japan is ready to promote dialogue and exchange with China in all areas and at all levels. He says a special emphasis will be on the exchange between the young people from both countries.

Regarding environmental protection and energy, Fukuda says both are important areas for building mutually beneficial cooperation between Japan and China. He says this cooperation can contribute to Asia and the world. And that he plans to make detailed suggestions on how the two sides can work together in this sector during his visit.
