Salvage workers are retrieving 130 tons of extremely corrosive chemicals from a half-sunken cargo vessel on the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. Four pumps are draining liquid caustic soda from the ship at a wharf in Yidu City in Hubei Province.

Workers have secured the boat and reinforced the 12 cargo holds. They also had to prevent it from capsizing. The ship was supposed to carry 500 tons of liquid caustic soda from Hubei to Hunan. But it began sinking as it was loaded. Environmental workers have been testing the water and say they have detected no pollution so far.
