A Chinese warship dropped anchor at Tokyo bay on Wednesday for the first time since World War II.

China says the port call by the guided missile destroyer "Shenzhen" is important for increasing exchanges between the Chinese People's Liberation Army and Japan's Self Defense Force and it adds a new page in the history of Sino-Japanese friendship.

Japan echoes this view, saying the landmark port call will boost friendship and increase trust between the two countries. A Japanese warship will pay a reciprocal visit to China at a later date.

The "Shenzhen" will be open to the Japanese public for tours during its four-day stay. It will also dock at the Japanese naval headquarters in Yokosuka, just south of Tokyo.
