China spends large sum of money on environmental protection efforts

The central government is providing a large sum of money to guarantee environmental protection efforts.

The State Council has announced a plan to invest more than one percent of annual gross domestic product to safeguard the environment.

Over 640 billion yuan will be spent on treating water pollution, while another 600 billion yuan will be allocated to reduce air pollution.

A further 200 billion yuan will go into handling solid waste. The Ministry of Finance also says a seven billion yuan reward scheme will be introduced to encourage companies to conserve energy, and reduce emissions.

The ministry says the rewards will be granted to companies that fulfill emissions requirements.
