An international forum on food safety is underway in Beijing. The two-day meeting will work to increase international collaboration.

Public health and national economies -- as economic globalization increases, the question of food safety gets a lot of attention.

Vice premier Wu Yi said, "As a major food import and export country, China will enhance the cooperation with countries worldwide. We sincerely hope that developed countries can help developing countries to raise the production standard, improve food production technology and strengthen supervision so we can improve the global food safety level together."

The Chinese government is now taking a series of measures to guarantee food safety. This includes drafting a food safety law which will intensify control over producers and distributors of food products.

More investment and severe penalties are also being adopted in the food safety sector. Such efforts are appreciated by other countries.

Forum topics include strengthening international exchanges and passing along experience and information on food safety efforts as well as contamination cases. A Beijing Declaration on Food Safety will be signed on by all parties on the second day.
