Powerful cyclone Sidr kills 48 in Bangladesh

DHAKA, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- At least 48 people have been killed by powerful cyclone in Bangladesh's southern coastal area since Thursday midnight, local media reported Friday.

Official television station BTV reported Friday morning 11 people were killed, among whom, seven are from southwestern Khulnadistrict, three from southern Bhola district and one from southwestern Satkhira district.

Official news agency BSS reported Friday that four people were killed in southern Madaripur district.

Private news UNB reported Friday 12 people died in southern Bagerhat district and 21 people died in southern Barisal district.

The media reported almost all the coastal areas are affected in Bangladesh and the death toll will go up.

Because of the cyclone, electricity and telephone have been disconnected since midnight in some places including capital Dhaka.
