US Defense Secretary Robert Gates is in Beijing for talks with Chinese military leaders. The two countries are expected to finalize arrangements for a "hotline" communications link between the Pentagon and China's Ministry of Defense.

A sign of the warming ties between the two armed forces.

US Defense Secretary Robert Gates is greeted by Chinese Defense Minister Cao Gangchuan. He is received with the highest military protocol. This is Gates's first visit to China since he was sworn in as Defense Secretary at the end of last year. He is on a three-nation tour which also includes the Republic of Korea and Japan.

Robert Gates and Cao Gangchuan held talks on regional security, military exchanges and international affairs.

One of their main concerns is to reach a final decision on a "hotline" between the two armed forces. The link is a way of reducing misunderstanding through dialogue. If established, this will be China's first hotline -- at the defense ministry level -- with another country.
