The government has approved a new food safety draft law in principle. Quality watchdog chief, Li Changjiang, says the new draft law aims to raise standards at every level of production.

Li's comments came as he met Margaret Chan, the director-general of the World Health Organization.

Food safety issue was a common concern at the meeting between product quality inspection chief Li Changjiang and WHO head Margaret Chan.

Guaranteeing food quality has become a government priority. Li Changjiang told Chan that China will further its work in this areas by bringing in new laws.

Li Changjiang said, "This morning the State Council has approved the draft law in principle. We will now submit it to the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress for approval."

Chan said she appreciates China's efforts on food safety and the responsibility should be shared by all countries.
