China's first lunar orbiter has a number of scientific objectives.

There are 4 scientific objectives of China's lunar orbiter project.

First is a three-dimensional survey of the Moon's surface. This is to provide reference for an orbiter's future landing on the moon.

Second is an analysis of the abundance and distribution of elements on the lunar surface. This will help scientists to draw a map of chemical elements on the moon.

Third is an investigation of the lunar regolith, the powdery soil layer on the moon's surface. This is to gather information about age and changes in the surface.

Fourth is an exploration of how the Earth and the moon relate to each other. It will be the first time China gathers space information out of the geo-stationary orbit.
