Special Report:   17th CPC National Congress

For the past 5 years, the All-China Federation of Trade Unions has taken innovative measures to protect workers' rights in a market-oriented economy. At the sidelines of the CPC National Congress, a Vice Chairperson of the Federation highlighted its achievements.

The Vice Chairperson of the All China Federation of Trade Unions says the country now has over 13 million grassroots labor unions, with roughly 200 million members. That's about 1/6 of China's total population.

One of the latest focus for the Federation is to help set up labor unions in an increasing number of joint ventures. Under the Federation's assistance, over 60 percent of foreign-invested companies in China now have labor unions. These organizations are playing positive roles in terms of safeguarding workers' rights and strengthening unification.

Congress delegate Sun Chunlan said, "Most transnational corporations respect laws and regulations of China. They boast a strong sense of social responsibility. For example, out of the 84 Walmart branches in China, 77 have labor unions now."
