The 17th CPC National Congress entered its second day. On Tuesday, members of the CPC Standing Committee of the Presidium have joined various delegations for group discussions. They called on all Party members to work together to create a harmonious socialist country with Chinese characteristics.

Hu Jintao took part in the discussion with the Jiangsu delegation. The delegates said the Party report has not only set the direction of the CPC, but also charted a course for the country.

The Jiangsu delegates noted that the past 5 years have seen the fastest growth in their province and this has greatly benefited its people. Hu Jintao was gratified by the province's development. He said since the 16th National Congress, the CPC Central Committee has formulated a series of strategies, such as the Scientific Outlook on Development, and they are continually being enriched and perfected when putting into practice.

Hu Jintao said "In the past, China gave priority to speed in social and economic development. A slogan proposed at the time went like this: 'fast and good development.' In last year's annual economic work conference, we changed the slogan to 'good and fast.' We put 'good' ahead of 'fast' to reflect our goal of raising the quality of the development. In the 17th CPC National Congress, we strengthened the concept of 'good and fast' development, and we will never go back to the old path, which consumed huge energy resources and large tracts of farmland."

Delegates from all social strata expressed their understanding of the Scientific Outlook on Development based on their own experiences. Hu Jintao said he hopes all members can carry forward the fine tradition of their Party and always put people's interests first.
