Conservationists on both sides of the Taiwan Straits are joining hands to save an endangered sea bird from extinction. They are urging fishermen to stop collecting and eating the birds' eggs.

The conservationists will begin cooperating next summer on research to determine the population of the Chinese crested terns and their migration track. Experts say the bird could become extinct in five years if protection efforts are not stepped up.

A recent survey found that the number of crested terns has fallen to 50, about half the number of three years ago. The sea bird was first spotted in 2000.
