Before the summit, President Roh Moo-hyun met with the DPRK's top legislator, Kim Yong Nam. The two discussed setting up a peace mechanism for the Korean Peninsula, and economic cooperation between the two sides. Later, Kim Yong Nam hosted a welcome dinner for the ROK President.

By toasting his host at the banquet arranged in his honor, President Roh Moo-hyun wrapped up the first day of his historic visit to Pyongyang.

In his address, Kim Yong Nam stressed the need to solidify peaceful co-existence and co-prosperity on the Korean Peninsula.

Kim Yong Nam, DPRK's top legislator, said, "The spirit of the declaration achieved at the summit in June 2000, is reconciliation and unity among our nations. They're national monuments that lead us to reunification and prosperity."

Roh Moo-hyun echoed these words. He also underlined the importance for both sides to trust each other.

Roh Moo-hyun said, "Building trust will lay the foundations to lead us into a future of national co-prosperity. If there is any suspicion towards each other, let's drop it right now."

The ROK President also promised to use the summit to press the urgent need for peace.
