The current summit between DPRK leader Kim Jong Il and South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun will open up new possibilities for "peace, co-prosperity and the reunification" of the Korean Peninsula. The DPRK Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Choe Su Hon made the remarks at the UN General Assembly.

Choe Su Hon, DPRK vice-minister for foreign affairs, said, "The North-South summit now underway in Pyongyang will be of great significance in opening up a new phase for peace, co-prosperity and reunification

by taking inter-Korean relations to a higher level on the basis of the historic joint declaration and the spirit of our nation itself. Nothing is more urgent and important than the reunification of our nation where people have been living for more than half a century with the sufferings of territorial division imposed by outside forces."

The DPRK diplomat also commented on the current 6-party nuclear talks expected to resume soon in Beijing.

DPRK urges US to end hostile policy

Choe Su Hon said, "The nuclear issue on the Korean peninsula, as made clear time and again on this very podium, is no more than a product of the deep-rooted, hostile US policy on Pyongyang persisting over half a century. Peace and stability on the Korean peninsula is directly linked to the peace and security of the northeast Asian region and the world as a whole. It is regretful however that there has never been an everlasting peace and stability on the Korean peninsula, repeating a cycle of tension. Its main cause is nothing but the present US-DPRK hostile relations."
