Taiwan's bid for a UN membership is under discussion at the 62nd session of the General Assembly of the world body today. And on Tuesday, the UN chief once again stated the UN's stance on Taiwan's entranc, saying that it was legally impossible.

UN Secretary-general Ban Ki-moon said, "By the resolution 2758 of 1971, the General Assembly decided to recognize the representatives of the People's Republic of China as the only legitimate representatives of China to the Untied Nations. This has been the official position of the United Nations and has not changed since 1971. This matter, which you asked me, was very carefully considered by the Secretariat, and in light of the resolution which I mentioned, 2758, it was not legally possible to receive the purported application for membership."
